Alstroemeria – The Peruvian Lily
The Peruvian lily is also known as the Alstroemeria or the Lily of Incas.
This flower is native to South America where it was discovered in the Peruvian mountains. Originally the Peruvian Lily was only found in two locations – Chile and Brazil. Interestingly, the flower would grow in Chile during the winter season and during the summer season in Brazil. However, since then the flower has been bred continuously and the resultant species can now be enjoyed all year long in different types of weather. Today the Peruvian Lilies can be found in over 120 species spread all over America, Australia and Europe.
The flower is named after Claus Alstroemer. He was a botanical student who, after touring South America during his work, decided to send some sample species back home. Later they became really popular among the common folk due to their beautiful radiant colors.
The Peruvian Lily is a very popular flower and a favorite of many to date. The flower can often be seen in bridal arrangements, weddings, parties, hotels and people’s living rooms. The flower can be cut and arranged in unlimited floral patterns since there are so many different color shades available. Initially there were only about five colors available but as a result of botanical breeding there are plenty of color schemes and patterns to choose from. It’s one of the top flowers cut and sent sold commercially
The flower exudes vibrance and is said to represent friendship. Giving the flowers to a friend is symbolic of god wishes and a lasting bond. Each stem of the Alstroemeria produces about 3-5 flowers. The flowers are tender with smooth edges and can be found in many shades of color. Each flower has two or more color shades and is spotted on the inner petals. The colors available include white, pink, yellow, purple, lavender, green and red, all with subsequent shades.
The Peruvian Lilies are a great choice for gifts. Once cut they can last about 12 days in water. This is another reason why they are so popular.
